Vladimir is one of Russia's oldest cities, long the capital of the Russian state. It was built in 1108 as a fortress on the banks of the river Klyazma by Vladimir Monomah, and given his name. The son of Yuriy Dolgorukiy, Andrei Bogolyubskiy, transferred the capital from Kiev to Vladimir, but in the 14th century the former capital becomes just a city in the Moscow state, a city of memories and holy places. Nizhny Novgorod is the third largest city in Russia with a population of over 1.5 million. It was founded by the Grand Prince Yuri in 1221 as a military fort at the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers.
In the 18th century Nizhny Novgorod grew to become the biggest trade center in Europe. Today it is a major commercial center and the site of numerous art exhibitions. A great number of historical, architectural and cultural monuments remain in the city, giving premise to UNESCO for inclusion of Nizhny Novgorod in the list of 100 cities constituting world historical and cultural value. Just like most cities associated with the Ural Mountains, the city of Perm is among top industrial leaders of the nation. For decades, Perm was a political exile starting with the Russian Nobility, who attempted a coop in December of 1825 against the Czar followed by Romanov's Royal family exile in 1917. Since 1930s, Perm becomes a part of the Stalin's GULAG system. But, despite the harshness of the past, the life goes on. Yekaterinburg is located in the middle section of the Ural mountain chain, right between Europe and Asia. The first settlers found silver, gems, diamonds... and gold, which started the first Russian gold-rush and made the city very rich. In the Soviet times the city was the main producer of munitions and was even closed for foreigners - it’s only been opened recently. Tyumen, a city of 600 000 people, is located in Western Siberia, 1800 kilometers east of Moscow and behind the Ural Mountains. With a population of 1.5 million, Novosibirsk is one the five largest cities in Russia. In 1925 the city was renamed to Novosibirsk (New Siberia) and became the main industrial, cultural and academic center of Siberia. It is the home of one of Russia's best universities, several institutes and a scientific research center. Krasnoyarsk today is the capital of a giant region and one of the biggest cultural, industrial and scientific centers of Eastern Siberia. The history and development of Khabarovsk is owed to General-Governor of East Siberia, Murav'ev-Amursky. He became known as the 'father' of Khabarovsk because he established this new military settlement on the Amur River. The Governor called the new outpost Khabarovka in honor of one of the remarkable "pioneers" of the Amur land, Erofei Khabarov. Vladivostok ("Ruler of the East") is often compared to San Francisco due to the many hills and ocean views, and is one of the most beautiful cities in Russia. As one of only four major seaports, Vladivostok is Russia's window to Asia, as it is located less than 100km east of the Chinese border, and just across the main Japanese Island of Honshu. Home base to the Russian Pacific Fleet, the city was closed to all non-Soviets from 1958 until 1991.
