Frequently Asked Questions
1.8. What are the train classes? On the Trans-Siberian, as well as on Trans-Mongolian and Trans-Manchurian railways, there exist 2 major classes of trains, used for travels on medium and long distances.a) SV/soft class/sleep carriage/spalny/first class: on Russian trains an SV consists of compartments with two berths and a small table in between. Dimensions of such a compartment are identical to the second class, but as there are only two beds inside carriages of this class provide more privacy, comfort and security. There are up to 10 compartments and two public WCs at each end of the carriage. SV class may not be available on some parts of the route. b) Kupe/Hard class/Second class: the compartments are of the same dimensions as the first class, but there are 4 berths inside. Each carriage has 9 compartments. This class is generally prefered by travelers for comfort and value for price. |
